This film, adapted from the eponymous novel by the Nobel Prize in Literature winner, is set in the new South Africa after the abolition of racial segregation. Professor Lurie, who was caught sexually harassing a female student but refused to admit his mistake and was subsequently expelled, returned to his daughter Lucy's home in the country to start a new life. However, in an violent robbery, Lucy was raped by three black men, including a minor, while Lurie himself was also burned. With a strong novel as its foundation, this film is commendable in both its storyline framework and dialogue writing. The intertwining of sexual desires, family affection, and racial conflicts creates frequent conflicts in the film, also providing Hollywood star John Malkovich with a perfect stage.
