In the movie, Stephen Chow plays a down-and-out father living with his son in an old house by the roadside in Ningbo. In order to give his son a good life, the father works at a construction site despite their poverty. Although they are poor, he still sends his son to an expensive private school. The father can't afford the expensive Yangtze River No. 7 toy for his son but can't bear to give up on it. By coincidence, he finds a strange object in the garbage pile and decides to give it to his son as a toy. Unexpectedly, this toy turns out to be a communicator linked to aliens known as "Yangtze River No. 7". The toy seems magical, making apples fresh again and even fixing electric fans. After some time, the son, Zhou Xiaodi, becomes close friends with No. 7. Xiaodi also luckily meets the beautiful and kind Teacher Yuan (played by Zhang Yuqi) at school. She is moved by their unwavering father-son bond and always helps and cares for Xiaodi. Later, the rich kids at school also become friends with Xiaodi. However, Zhou Tie tragically dies in an accident at work, leaving both Xiaodi and Teacher Yuan heartbroken. Fortunately, No. 7 uses its last bit of strength to revive Zhou Tie, sacrificing its own life in the process. In the end, everything feels renewed. Dad Zhou Tie develops feelings for Teacher Yuan and begins courting her, and surprisingly, No. 7 also brings back a group of companions.
