"Shock and Awe", produced by the August 1st Film Studio as part of their series on major realistic themes—following "Surging Waves" and "Heart-stopping"—is the final installment in this trilogy. "Shock and Awe" tells the story of Tang Xinsheng, the commander of a certain military brigade, who encounters a massive earthquake during an exercise. With communications cut off and no contact with higher-ups, he resolutely leads his troops through numerous obstacles to rush to the hardest-hit Yingchuan County for a life-and-death rescue mission. Unlike traditional disaster-rescue films, "Shock and Awe" focuses consistently on the rescuers themselves. Through its portrayal and depiction of the People's Liberation Army, it showcases the heroic spirit of the soldiers who are unafraid of sacrifice and reveals their rich, intricate inner worlds.
