Julien is the young, handsome, and resolute son of a carpenter in the small town of Verrières. From a young age, Julien aspired to rise in society through personal achievement. After the restoration of the monarchy, his path to success through joining the red army uniformed ranks was blocked, so he chose to don a black church robe instead, aiming to climb the social ladder. His first step into society was becoming a tutor for the mayor's family. Driven by a desire for revenge against the mayor and a need to test his own courage, Julien developed an ambiguous relationship with the mayor’s wife. When this affair was exposed, Julien entered the Besançon seminary and later joined the household of the Marquis de La Mole as a secretary, thanks to the recommendation of Father Pirard. His intelligence and personality not only earned him the Marquis' respect but also won the heart of the Marquis’ daughter. The couple secretly married, which enraged the Marquis, though he could do nothing about it. As a result, Julien received a knighthood, a captaincy, and an estate with an annual income of 20,600 francs. However, Julien's triumph was short-lived; soon he found himself ensnared in the traps set by the aristocracy and the Church, ultimately leading to his execution on the guillotine, becoming a victim of the ruling class's conspiracy.
