Beauty in the Haunted House

This film is adapted from "Bookworm" in Liaozhai. Bookworm Lang Yuzhu was bullied by his uncle Lang Zhongyuan and was forced to move into the Xiaolian Mansion, which was rumored to be haunted by evil ghosts. There, he encounters Mother Yan and her daughter Ruyu. Mother Yan dies from severe injuries, and Yuzhu and Ruyu fall in love over time, eventually becoming husband and wife. Uncle Zhongyuan, refusing to believe Yuzhu's good fortune, investigates the Xiaolian Mansion with his friend Shi Liangjin. Upon seeing Ruyu's beauty, Liangjin abducts her and rapes her. Liangjin's wives, consumed by jealousy, poison Ruyu with a deadly toxin made from a peacock's gallbladder. Ruyu transforms into a vengeful ghost, killing Zhongyuan, Liangjin, and others to avenge herself. Yuzhu, saddened by Ruyu's departure from the mortal world, is left with nothing but endless loneliness and longing.
