This film is adapted from the true story of Sister Helen Prejean. She began corresponding with death row inmate Matthew Poncelet at his request, later visiting him in prison, gradually becoming his spiritual confidant, and uncovering the unusual truth behind Matthew's murder of a young couple. In the face of the villagers' anger and the grief of the victims' parents, Helen had the courage to ask for their forgiveness and mercy for Matthew's sins. Matthew, who had refused to repent until then, finally broke through his defenses and sincerely confessed before his execution, accepting his fate with peace. Director Tim Robbins used a profound yet fluid approach to depict the mental state of a criminal's inner world, also showing the noble character of clergy members. With Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn delivering superbly nuanced performances, this serious-themed film radiates a touching power.
