This movie is adapted from the true story of Sister Helen Prejean. She began corresponding with death row inmate Matthew Poncelet at his request, later visited him in prison, gradually becoming his spiritual confidant, and uncovered the unusual truth behind Matthew's murder of a young couple. In the face of the anger of the villagers and the grief of the victims' parents, Helen had the courage to ask for their forgiveness and mercy for Matthew's sins. Matthew, who had refused to repent until then, finally broke through his defenses and sincerely confessed before his execution, accepting his death with peace. Director Tim Robbins used a profound yet fluid technique to depict the mental state of a criminal's inner world, as well as the noble character of a clergy member. With Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn delivering brilliant and nuanced performances, this serious-themed movie radiates a touching power.
