Strange problems with Office 2007 (a fragile Office 2007)

The official version of Microsoft's Office 2007 is about to be released. I recently installed the beta version of Office 2007 to try it out. By accident, I discovered a strange issue. When Office Excel 2007 opens documents from earlier versions of Microsoft Excel 4.0 Worksheet (*.xls), it actually crashes.
