According to Kyodo News on December 29, Fast Retailing Co., Ltd., which operates the casual wear brand Uniqlo (), has recently decided to open super-large stores with a sales area of about 3,300 square meters in eight cities: Sapporo, Sendai, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima.
Tadashi Yanai, Chairman and CEO of the company, commented on the already opened super-large stores: "The rich variety of products and their display methods have been highly praised, and the (customer attraction) effect is very good." The company hopes to further activate and develop its domestic business by launching super-large stores in major cities.
A characteristic of these super-large stores is that they can utilize spacious interior spaces, similar to Uniqlo's Taobao flagship store, where they can house a variety of popular products as well as showcase them using large screens and mannequins. Currently, Uniqlo already has five super-large stores in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kobe, located within commercial facilities directly connected to terminal stations. The company has already planned to open new stores in Ginza and Shinjuku, Tokyo, in 2012.
The company hopes to increase the current number of 850 domestic stores to 1,000 by around 2020, including these super-large stores. Yanai also commented on whether to open new super-large stores in regions outside of the aforementioned cities: "We hope to monitor sales performance and judge whether it is possible to operate smoothly in cities with smaller populations."
