On February 25th this year, in a kindergarten in the Shizhong District of Jinan City, a five-year-old girl had her hat caught by a protruding object on the slide while playing, causing her neck to be strangled by her clothing. She was left hanging on the slide and her life hung in the balance. Throughout the incident, due to the negligence of the kindergarten teachers who failed to notice in time, the girl eventually died from suffocation... Recently, it was reported that this highly publicized case of campus safety was recently given a first-instance verdict by the Shizhong District Court of Jinan City. The two involved kindergarten teachers were sentenced for involuntary manslaughter.
The reporter Li Shi Wu stated that a five-year-old girl was found hanging on the slide and later succumbed to asphyxiation. It was determined through court investigations that Song Mou and Zhang Mou were teachers at a certain kindergarten class in Jinan City. On February 25th, 2011, around 11 o'clock in the morning, Song Mou, as the lead teacher of the class, along with Zhang Mou, the nursery aide, organized outdoor activities for the children at the playground near the slide. During the activity, the main responsibility for the children's safety lay with the lead teacher, Song Mou, with assistance from nursery aide, Zhang Mou.
At around 11:18 AM that day, Song Mou and Zhang Mou gathered the children to leave the playground without accurately counting the number of children present. This resulted in the victim, Yi Yi (a pseudonym), being left alone on the slide. Her neck was strangled when a screw at the top of the slide caught her clothing. She was not discovered and rescued until 12:05 PM that day. She was then sent to the hospital but unfortunately passed away after unsuccessful resuscitation attempts.
A forensic examination determined that the little girl, Yi Yi, died from mechanical asphyxiation caused by blunt external force pressing on her neck. That afternoon, police officers arrived at the kindergarten based on reports from the public and identified Song Mou and Zhang Mou as suspects. After interrogation, Song Mou initially denied failing to accurately count the number of children, but later confessed to the fact both during subsequent interrogations and in court. On March 10th of the same year, Zhang Mou turned herself in after being summoned by the police via telephone. It was learned that the kindergarten compensated the victim's parents with economic damages amounting to 798,000 yuan after the incident.
Recently, the court ruled that due to their negligence, Song Mou and Zhang Mou were responsible for the death of one person, which constituted involuntary manslaughter under relatively mild circumstances. The prosecution's charges against the two defendants were established. Among them, Song Mou, as the lead teacher, bore primary responsibility for the victim’s death; while defendant Zhang Mou, as the nursery aide, bore secondary responsibility. Considering their good attitude towards confession and evident remorse, the court sentenced Song Mou to one and a half years in prison, suspended for two years, for involuntary manslaughter. Defendant Zhang Mou was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for one year, for involuntary manslaughter.
