Ms. Bai, who lives in Qingdao, Shandong, reported that among the two bags of "insect eggs" she purchased from the supermarket with anti-counterfeiting labels, one egg had a red egg white. On the afternoon of March 4, a reporter contacted the manufacturer of the anti-counterfeiting label for the eggs. A responsible person surnamed Zhang said: "If only one or two eggs have this problem, it must be a special situation because the hens are on their period and having menstruation." Dr. Ji Haifeng, a livestock expert at China Agricultural University, stated that there could be two reasons for blood-colored egg whites: one is that the hens were infected by E. coli which caused severe inflammation of the oviduct, and the other is that problematic feed was added during the rearing process. Ji Haifeng said that hens do not have periods, and so-called "insect eggs" mean that it's impossible for egg-laying chickens to be fully fed insects; it's more likely that insect components were added to their feed. It is suggested that citizens should not consume eggs with bloody whites.
