Report by Cai Wenpei: A woman from Qijiang named Zhang Xiuli, nearing forty and longing for a child, went to the Qijiang County Hospital for examination. The test revealed that she had an ovarian cyst which required surgical removal before she could conceive. However, after the surgery, Zhang began experiencing abdominal pain that persisted for over two years. She could also feel a hard object in her abdomen when pressing it. Recently, unable to endure the pain any longer, Zhang went to Daping Third Hospital for examination. The doctors performed surgery and removed a fist-sized lump from her abdominal cavity - upon cutting it open, they found 8 pieces of gauze inside, twisted into a spherical shape.
The hospital investigated the situation regarding Zhang's previous surgery. The investigation showed that during the operation at their hospital, no gauze was used to stop bleeding; instead, blood-soaked cloths were utilized. "As for why there are pieces of gauze in her abdomen, we have no idea," Wang Jiang stated. Currently, whether Zhang underwent surgery at another hospital remains unverified and would require professional authoritative medical appraisal under mutual agreement between both parties.
What caused the presence of gauze in Zhang's abdomen? Who should be held accountable for her enduring so much pain?
The lump was not a tumor but rather a ball formed by gauze.
"Currently, considering the patient's feelings, we haven't yet proposed to the family about checking if there was a third-party surgery. If through specialized medical appraisals, it is determined that the gauze in Zhang's abdomen is related to the first surgery at our hospital, then we will take full responsibility," Wang Jiang said.
Subsequently, Daping Third Hospital performed a lump excision surgery on Zhang, removing a gray-yellow peritoneal tissue measuring 15x12x4 cm from her abdomen. Within this peritoneum, there was a lump sized 10x6x4 cm, equivalent to an adult's fist. Upon cutting it open, they found 8 pieces of gauze inside. "When the doctor told me what was taken out of my belly was a pile of gauze, I found this result harder to accept than being told I had cancer," Zhang Xiuli couldn't believe that after two surgeries and enduring over two years of pain, what was ultimately removed from her abdomen was merely a ball made of gauze.
After some time, the abdominal pain did not subside. "Although it hurt, the doctor told me it was nothing, so I thought maybe it was still due to my poor health, and with more rest, everything would be fine." Thus, Zhang gave up her job and stayed home resting, but the pain continued. One day, she accidentally felt a hard object in her abdomen, realizing her condition was not as simple as she had imagined.
This incident dates back to August 2009. Zhang Xiuli, a citizen of Qijiang who was almost 40 and wanted a child, went to the Qijiang County Hospital for examination. The results showed that she had an ovarian cyst requiring surgical removal before she could become pregnant. Subsequently, she was admitted to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Qijiang County Hospital and underwent an ovarian cystectomy. "The surgery was done under semi-anesthesia, and throughout the process, I was very conscious," Zhang recalled.
After the surgery, Zhang stayed in the hospital for a few days before returning home. But in the following days, she often felt a dull ache in her lower abdomen. "I thought the pain might be a normal reaction post-surgery and that it would go away once I recovered," Zhang said. What she didn’t expect was that as time passed, the pain in her lower abdomen did not disappear but became more frequent and intense. In June 2010, she returned to the Qijiang County Hospital for examination. "The doctor conducted an MRI and said there was nothing wrong." So, Zhang went home again.
Who exactly put the 8 pieces of gauze in Zhang's abdomen? Our newspaper will continue to follow the progress of this case.
On October 20th this year, Zhang came to Daping Third Hospital for examination. The results showed there was indeed a lump in her abdominal cavity, preliminarily diagnosed as a small intestine stromal tumor. "Seeing the results showing a tumor and thinking about how severely I've been in pain these past two years, I thought I had cancer," Zhang said. Although the doctor informed her that the final diagnosis would require surgically removing the lump and conducting tests, she already carried a heavy mental burden, fearing she had a terminal illness. As a result, she cried every day, lost her appetite, and became significantly thinner.
"The surgery at Qijiang County Hospital not only failed to help me get pregnant but also left 8 pieces of gauze inside me. I can't accept this reality," Zhang recently complained to the Qijiang Health Bureau about the Qijiang County Hospital, hoping for reasonable compensation for the harm caused. The Qijiang Health Bureau has accepted Zhang's complaint and started an investigation.
Yesterday, Wang Jiang, the president of Qijiang County Hospital, confirmed that Zhang indeed underwent an ovarian cystectomy at their hospital in August 2009. Daping Third Hospital also informed them about Zhang's recent surgery where 8 pieces of gauze were found in her abdomen.
