According to Xinhua News Agency (intern reporter Yang Jing), yesterday, at the Guanggu Sculpture Square, a performance art was staged: three men were dragged by a woman with a dog leash, crawling nearly 100 meters. According to the organizer, this work was to express resistance against the patriarchal society and call for gender equality. Many onlookers had mixed reactions, and some even criticized it as "pretentious."
Kang Yi, 25 years old, originally from Hengyang, Hunan, majored in oil painting during his university years, and devoted himself to contemporary art creation in 2005. In recent years, he has organized various themed performance arts in many places across the country, including slapping each other with facial paralysis patients and kneeling down to thank sanitation workers. This was the first time he and his team came to Wuhan.
At around 10:30 am yesterday, Kang Yi and three other companions arrived at Guanggu Sculpture Square. After announcing the start of the activity, he and two other men put dog leashes around their necks, while Ms. Liu held the leash and led the three to crawl on the ground. Afterwards, Kang Yi lay prostrate on the ground and licked the shoes on the woman's feet.
Kang Yi explained that women, as a vulnerable group, often become victims of domestic violence, gender discrimination, and other negative phenomena. Their work mainly questioned the idea of male superiority and female inferiority and called for the protection of women's legitimate rights and interests. When the reporter asked if this form was too extreme, Kang Yi frankly admitted: "Art is all exaggerated, and only in this way can it attract attention."
Kang Yi and others' "performance" attracted many passers-by to stop and watch. In the reporter's random interviews, several older respondents said they "didn't understand." One grandfather even expressed his disgust directly, saying "showy and too disgusting."
In sharp contrast, a woman teacher surnamed Huang from a certain university praised it highly. When Kang Yi and others invited passers-by to sign on the banner, Ms. Huang not only signed her name but also wrote the word "support." She told the reporter that women are the mothers of the whole society, and this activity reflected the return of the female spirit.
This activity also caught the attention of a foreign elderly man. After the reporter approached him, he learned that the man's name was Richard, from the UK, who had just come to China not long ago. He told the reporter that discrimination against women is a global issue, and women should be treated fairly. However, he also said that he had never seen such activities in his own country.
