For dual-core HD notebooks under 3K, who says low-end has no market? When "tall, rich, and handsome" becomes a new word for being different, those Macbook Airs adorned with gold and diamonds, SUPREMEFIRE, and extremely high-end Dell Alienwares, with their dazzling configurations of luxury, hide beneath them budget models priced under 3 thousand yuan, featuring Pentium B9, Celeron B8, Core i3 with HD 3000 integrated graphics, AMD E/C series machines, quietly tucked away in the corners of the market. For entry-level users seeking cost-effective daily internet entertainment, this article first compares the low-end configurations and performance differences under 3K, then recommends integrated and discrete graphics products.
Sandy Bridge architecture Celeron B815 integrated graphics test
Like netbooks, Brazos APU was designed for low power consumption, especially targeting HD video, online entertainment, and portable devices, obviously not mainstream performance. Although Brazos APU was born at an unfortunate time during the decline of netbooks, data processing performance-wise, compared to APU A-series processors, Brazos APU is indeed very weak. However, with only 18W power consumption (including GPU), Brazos APU E/C series processors can perfectly realize HD video playback, surpassing Atom and ION combinations in all aspects. Undoubtedly, the Radeon HD 6320/6310 graphics core paired with the Bobcat architecture is a perfect combination, capable of handling mainstream HD videos, online entertainment, even some 3D games at entry-level settings, faster than most current integrated graphics cards, and not inferior to Sandy Bridge's HD Graphics 3000 under DirectX 11 features. Is this not enough?
AMD APU E-450 (integrated graphics): 1024x768 (left), 1280x768 (right)
In terms of the market, the performance under 3K can be divided as follows if purely discussing integrated graphics: Core i3 integrated > Pentium B9 integrated > Celeron B815 integrated > APU E-450. Since Brazos APU series processors are designed for low power consumption, from the 3DMark06 test results, they are almost equal to Celeron B815's performance, with little difference. Although APU E/C series have lower clock frequencies, adding a discrete graphics card configuration can significantly reduce the CPU's data pressure on graphic performance.
On the other hand, within the 3K price range, selecting integrated graphics models offers more balanced matching. However, apart from many integrated graphics models, various notebook manufacturers also offer numerous discrete graphics models, enhancing performance, such as Pentium B9 paired with GT 540M, HD 6370M, APU E-450/E-350 paired with HD 6470M discrete graphics card configurations, offering quite significant performance improvements. Below is a price table for five products introduced in this article.
Through 3Dmark06 testing the performance of Celeron Dual-Core B815, since the test includes both graphics card and processor comprehensive performance, it can also serve as a reference for daily application needs. In the Core i3 + HD3000 integrated test (default resolution of 1280x768), it scores around 3600 points, Pentium Dual-Core B940 + HD3000 integrated scores about 3100 points, while this Celeron Dual-Core B815 scores 2911 points, showing clear step-by-step differentiation. Under the Sandy Bridge architecture, performance ratios can be roughly calculated as follows: Celeron B815 = 80% x Pentium B940 = 72% x Core i3 (integrated graphics).
Careful friends may notice that since the Celeron B815 dual-core processor continues the Sandy Bridge architecture, compared to Core i series, the disadvantages of the dual-core Celeron B815 include lack of AVX instruction set support and reduced L3 cache. Compared to its "difficult brother" Pentium Dual-Core B9 series, many specifications are very similar, such as both having 2MB L3 cache, GPU core frequency 650-1050MHz (Pentium B9 series GPU dynamic frequency is 650-1100MHz, slightly higher), actual performance is also relatively close.
A nearly perfect fusion: AMD APUBrazos low-power platform
Besides Intel, on the AMD side, configurations currently falling under 3K include AMD E/C series models. The AMD Brazos platform consists of two main parts: Zacate E series and Ontario C series APU processors based on the Bobcat microarchitecture, manufactured using TSMC's 40nm process. They have a small area of only 75 square millimeters.
The E series processors include APU E-450/350/300, all dual-core dual-thread designs, 1M Level 2 high-speed cache, integrated graphics core. The APU E-450 dual-core processor's clock frequency is still designed to be 1.6GHz, TDP thermal design power consumption is 18W, the biggest difference being the internal integrated graphics card upgraded to AMD Radeon HD6320G. APU E-350/300 integrates Radeon HD 6310, supporting DirectX 11, TDP design is merely 18W, with quite low power consumption.
