At the age of 16, Amanda Sturner passed all grade exams smoothly, attended the athletics team's sliding training, and got along well with the little boys around her. She was a typical teenager, but Amanda Sturner's parents thought she could do better. They were the kind of family who took an active approach to everything, so they decided to let Amanda Sturner go on a trip to further enhance her abilities. This time, she would embark on a journey with 11 strangers of the same age. The outdoor expansion course included rock climbing, white-water canoeing, hiking, service projects, and running 12 miles, among others. This trip not only challenged her direction in doing things but also had great benefits for shaping her future. Outdoor Bound (OB) is a non-profit organization initially founded in Europe in 1941 as a way to educate young soldiers and train their survival skills. Its name originates from the meaning of a ship leaving the harbor. The organization adopted this metaphor to suggest that people need to leave their comfortable lives to face new challenges and gain more understanding and improvement of themselves. For Sturner, a sensitive and easily moved teenager, facing such difficulties and setbacks would have a direct and permanent impact on her, even causing a significant change in her character or qualities. Therefore, when she returned to Louisville, Kentucky, she redefined herself and regained the positivity and emotion she had lost. These new ideas of Sturner led her to choose the University of Colorado in the United States, which advocates acquiring true knowledge from practice, just like outdoor expansion training. After graduating from university in 1995, Sturner worked for the Outdoor Bound Training Institute in the following years. At the same time, she obtained an education degree from the University of Colorado, hoping to further extend the field of outdoor expansion training. In 2007, the Outdoor Bound (OB) organization appointed her as the project director of Beijing expansion training company. Under her advocacy, the enthusiasm for local outdoor expansion training greatly increased. When scholarship support decreased due to economic recession, Sturner and the local advisory board established a restricted river domain tracking competition system to support the scholarship project.
