In the afternoon of the Lunar New Year's Eve, the reporter came to Nanjing West Railway Station. There were fewer people bustling around than usual, and not many passengers boarding the train. He Xun, a young police captain of the Nanjing Railway Police Force born in 1984, was on duty with his colleague Dong Wei. They were going to be patrolling on the K527/8 train from Nanjing West to Guangzhou. He Xun is one of the younger police captains in the Nanjing railway police system. Since he became a police captain in 2009, this will be the third year that he hasn't spent the New Year's Eve at home with his family.

The New Year's Eve and the first day of the New Year were both spent accompanying passengers on the train.

The reporter boarded the K527/8 train with He Xun. There were not many passengers on the train. He Xun introduced that as they reached Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou, the number of passengers would gradually increase. This train always had a large passenger flow and complex public security conditions along the way. It departed at 3:07 PM and arrived in Guangzhou around 6:10 PM the next day. Both they and the passengers would spend New Year's Eve and the first day of the New Year on the train. "There is no TV on this train, so we can only listen to the Spring Festival Gala on the radio with the passengers."

He Xun laughed and said that even though it was the New Year, there would still be pickpockets active on the train. Last New Year's Eve, He Xun was on duty on the K527 train heading to Guangzhou. The train restaurant car specially prepared dumplings and late-night snacks for the passengers, but as a police officer, He Xun led his team to patrol back and forth in the carriage and did not eat a single dumpling. At midnight, the few passengers in the hard-seat carriage gradually fell asleep. At this time, two young men with short-distance tickets boarded the train. Through observation, He Xun found these two young men suspicious, so he quietly followed them. Wherever these two went, he followed, holding a whistle to warn passengers about theft prevention. The suspects were unable to act and could only leave the train dejectedly at the next station. He Xun said that the more relaxed everyone was, the more rampant the suspects would be. Therefore, for the police officers on the train, as long as they were on the train, they had to focus fully on their work, without any distinction between weekdays and holidays.

He Xun felt very happy when he saw photos of his wife and daughter on Weibo.

After working for six years, He Xun is usually very introverted. He frankly told the reporter that he met his wife in 2009 through an introduction from a colleague. From their marriage to the birth of their daughter, He Xun has never spent a New Year's Eve with his wife. This makes He Xun feel very guilty, especially towards his newly born daughter. Every time he thinks about not being able to accompany his precious daughter during holidays, he feels heartbroken. He also wants to sit around the table with his family on New Year's Eve, making dumplings, eating reunion dinner, and watching the Spring Festival Gala together. On the first day of the New Year, the sound of firecrackers continues into the early morning, and neighbors and relatives visit each other for New Year greetings... In the past, he didn't feel how precious it was to spend the Spring Festival at home, but now he really yearns for those moments...

But then again, He Xun smiled brightly at the reporter and said that compared to the older police officers who have dedicated decades, his own contribution really doesn't amount to much. Because the career of a police officer on the train dictates that as long as you are traveling, you are the "guardian" of a train. Seeing all passengers arrive safely at their destination is the mission accomplished for the police officer on the train.

When the reporter called He Xun again, the train had already left and was approaching Suzhou station. Over the phone, He Xun told the reporter that he had just seen a photo uploaded by his wife on Weibo. His wife and daughter looked so adorable. Although he couldn't celebrate the Spring Festival with his family, chatting with them via WeChat and Weibo made him very happy.
