Experts from Chengdu Gospel Ear, Nose and Throat Department pointed out that atrophic rhinitis, also known as foul-smelling nose syndrome, is a slowly progressing atrophic inflammatory condition of the nasal cavity. Its characteristics include atrophy of the nasal mucosa, periosteum, and bone tissue. Severe cases accompanied by typical foul odor are referred to as foul-smelling nose syndrome. It often begins during puberty and is more common in females than males. The main symptoms include dryness of the nose and nasopharynx, nasal obstruction, nosebleeds, excessive crusts in the nose, olfactory dysfunction, foul-smelling exhalation, headache, and dizziness.

So, what dietary precautions should patients with atrophic rhinitis take in daily life?

1. Avoid salty and cold foods. Salted vegetables, salted fish, and various overly salty aquatic products are inherently cold in nature. Consuming them can cause contraction of the mucous membranes in the affected areas, exacerbating nasal congestion and throat discomfort.

2. Avoid smoking. Smoking contains nicotine which irritates the mucous membrane. When the mucous membrane is stimulated by smoke, secretions increase, so some people experience an increase in nasal mucus after smoking. Additionally, smoke stimulation can worsen symptoms like nasal itching and sneezing.

3. Avoid raw and cold foods. Patients with this condition, especially those classified as external wind-cold type or evil stagnation in the nasal cavity type, should avoid raw and cold foods. Consuming too many cold and cooling foods, such as various cold drinks, frozen items, chilled pears, and chilled watermelons, can stimulate the nasal mucosa, worsening the condition.

4. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption. The alcohol that evaporates during drinking can enter the nasal cavity through the nostrils, irritating the nasal mucosa and causing it to become congested. Repeated congestion of the nasal mucosa inevitably leads to the occurrence and development of chronic rhinitis. A habit of excessive drinking not only easily causes various types of rhinitis but is also one of the important factors leading to persistent and difficult-to-cure conditions.

5. Avoid spicy and stimulating foods. Spices like chili peppers, black pepper, curry, mustard, cinnamon bark, and overly concentrated seasonings can irritate the upper respiratory tract, causing inflammatory changes and worsening congestion of the nasal mucosa. They can also exacerbate headaches and nasal congestion, so they should be avoided.
