"I'll work with you next year, I'll take care of all the fertilizers for the saplings and flowers," said mountain friend Zhao Qin. "Yeah! We mountain friends, each of us can contribute a shovel of soil or move a stone, and we can make this mountaintop park better. Next spring, let's build the park together," said mountain friend Sun Guiqin. The mountain friends are grateful to Mr. Zhang for bringing them joy. Sitting in a warm room, elderly Mr. Zhang Huanqi began improvising poetry again, his loud voice not resembling that of an 84-year-old man at all. "Look, this is your picture playing the saxophone in the park!" In the elder's computer, there was a folder filled with pictures from the mountain friend gatherings held in the mountaintop park. These pictures brought back happy memories for the mountain friends of their time spent in the mountaintop park. Sun Guiqin, 57 years old, was one of the earliest mountain friends to come to Erlong Mountain for morning exercises. "Back then, the park's location was just a small half-moon shaped platform, only about ten steps in size. Two people standing on it would have no more space, but the scenery was good, and many people liked to stop and rest there. Elderly Mr. Zhang Huanqi was the one who stayed the longest on that small platform." "We saw Mr. Zhang working hard every day on the platform, breaking stones bit by bit with a pickaxe and clearing debris with a shovel. The small platform quickly expanded into a large one capable of accommodating hundreds of people. Later, flowers were planted around the platform, turning it into a mountaintop park," said mountain friend Gao Min. "After the park was built, we hold a gathering there every year. We sing songs and dance together, it's so much fun," said Zhao Qin. Reporter Liu Hongtao In 2011, the grafted mountain jujubes ripened, producing large and sweet dates, but Elderly Mr. Zhang Huanqi didn't eat a single one. Every time the mountain friends ate these dates, they would think of Mr. Zhang Huanqi, who carried a spade and pickaxe to build the park on the mountaintop. Due to weather reasons, Mr. Zhang Huanqi hasn't been to the little park on the mountaintop to work for a long time. In 2010, since Erlong Mountain was a stone mountain, the survival rate of over a hundred pine trees planted by Mr. Zhang Huanqi was not high, so he spent his own money to graft and improve the existing jujube trees on the mountain, allowing the mountain friends to enjoy sweet and delicious dates. On June 14, 2008, and September 27, 2011, our newspaper reported twice on the achievements of Mr. Zhang Huanqi. CCTV journalists specially visited for interviews. At the elder's home, there were constantly mountain friends coming to visit, as close as family. After finishing the platform, Mr. Zhang Huanqi built an eleven-level terraced field below the platform and planted some trees and wildflowers. With the trees and flowers, the platform on the mountaintop became a park. The mountain friends placed some large stones around the edge of the platform, inscribed with the three big characters "Tongxin Stone", as a memorial to the completion of the park given by the mountain friends to Mr. Zhang Huanqi. "I will continue building, constructing a Mongolian yurt to protect everyone from wind and rain; building a reservoir to water the trees and flowers on the mountain; transforming the eleven-level terraced fields into a hundred-herb garden, each level a different color; connecting all the small platforms on the mountain to form a string-of-pearls-like small garden; these are all my ideas. As long as I can still climb the mountain, I will continue building," said Mr. Zhang Huanqi happily, his face glowing red with joy. For four years guarding the mountaintop, he helped climbers find a home. "The mountain is bright, the scenery is good, standing there makes me happy. When I started repairing the platform, I didn't think too much, just wanting to expand it so more people could play there, step by step it turned into the current park," said Mr. Zhang Huanqi. Mr. Zhang Huanqi said, when building the mountaintop garden, he didn't think too much, "just wanting to expand it so more people could play there." Initially, when Mr. Zhang Huanqi started building the park, many people climbing the mountain didn't understand. They thought the elderly man was bored at home and came to the mountain to work for entertainment. They watched as this eighty-something-year-old man used a pickaxe to break stones piece by piece, then cleared inch by inch of the small platform, gradually expanding it more than double its original size. "The small platform expanded, but it still looked barren. So I collected some wildflowers and planted them around the edges of the platform. Then, to prevent soil erosion, I used broken stones from the mountain to build a stone dam, making the platform look much better," said Mr. Zhang Huanqi. Years ago, I heard stories about the elderly man developing the mountain, and this story is still being told today. The respected elder not only gave life to this mountain but also instilled a spirit and confidence in it. - Netizen "Lingyuan" After four years, the mountaintop park became the home of the mountain friends, successfully hosting four mountain friend gatherings. I am happy climbing mountains, and I want to bring happiness to more people. In 2008, Mr. Zhang Huanqi expanded the small platform into a large platform where dozens of people could do exercises together, and built scenic rocks and stone dams around the platform. This small platform became a mountaintop park. The elderly man self-funded an invitation for regular mountain climbers to hold the first mountain friend gathering in this mountaintop park, where many mountain friends showcased their talents. In the summer of 2007, Mr. Zhang Huanqi began morning exercises at Erlong Mountain, three kilometers away from his home. Seeing many morning exercisers observing the scenery and resting on a small platform halfway up the mountain, he began repairing and expanding this small platform. In 2009, Mr. Zhang Huanqi started planting pine trees and wildflowers near the mountaintop park, enhancing the park's aesthetic appeal. He did not stop the construction of the park and began carving out another small platform and an eleven-level terraced field around the large platform. He said, the mountain is bright, the scenery is beautiful, standing there makes him happy, so he wanted to make more people happy. Thus, using a pickaxe to dig bit by bit and a shovel to clear block by block, he built a "mountain-top park" for mountain climbers. Swinging the pickaxe and shovel, he was already an 80-year-old man; when the garden was completed, he earned the name: "Modern Yu Gong." Each time I stand in that little park on the mountaintop, I feel particularly moved. There aren't actually more landscapes in this park, but this platform embodies the ceaseless labor of Mr. Zhang Huanqi. This labor wasn't a fleeting enthusiasm of a young person but rather the result of years of effort by an elderly man, moving stone by stone, shovel by shovel of soil, meter by meter, expanding it into the current small park. This labor achievement rivals that of the ancient Yu Gong, and the act of building a park for mountain climbers to relax indeed moves people.
