The Gan沟 ancient canal is the earliest section of China's Grand Canal and also the relic of the world's earliest man-made canal, http://www.yzqiyuan.com/Web/. The existing Gan沟 ancient canal is about five li long and about ten meters wide. Its origin, Yangzhou Qiyuan, is located from the Luosiwan Bridge in the north of the present city to the Gold Dam area. The Gan沟 was excavated by King Fuchai of Wu at the end of the Spring and Autumn Period, more than 2470 years ago. It connects to the Yangtze River in the south and reaches Mo Kou in the north, with a length of hundreds of miles. Today's Jinghang Grand Canal is an extension of the Gan沟 towards the north and south. Archaeological workers have discovered the mast of a Tang Dynasty wooden ship east of the present riverbed, found the bamboo-reinforced bank made of nanmu wood from the Tang Dynasty on the south bank of the west section of the riverbed, and collected fragments of hard pottery with geometric patterns from the Spring and Autumn-Warring States period along the banks of the ancient canal. The current relics of the Gan沟 have been listed as a cultural relic protection unit, and the river has been dredged, with Yangzhou Qiyuan as its origin. Green willows line both banks, creating beautiful scenery and leaving behind many traces of domestic and international scholars visiting the ancient Gan沟.
