By reporter Haisheng Chen of the Express and correspondent Haiying Huang: Huazhou police captured a major car robbery gang, with 4 suspects arrested.

Yesterday, I learned from the Huazhou police that on December 30th last year, the Huazhou police dismantled a criminal gang that pretended to be passengers in order to rob cars. They arrested 4 suspects involved in the case and solved 3 robbery cases.

● Pretending to be passengers

At around midnight on December 17th last year, Yang Ren, a man from Maoming, walked into Liangguang Police Station of Huazhou Public Security Bureau to report being robbed.

On the evening of December 16th last year, Yang Ren was waiting for customers at the Maoming highway entrance with his private car when he picked up two men who claimed they were going to Huazhou. They agreed on a price of 180 yuan. When the car reached the Liangguang section of Huazhou, the two passengers asked Yang to drive to a brick factory area, claiming it was their destination. Then, two more men appeared outside the car. They quickly overpowered Yang Ren, searched him, and stole over 100 yuan in cash. Subsequently, one of the robbers sat in the driver's seat and drove off with the car. Not long after, the car suffered a flat tire, forcing the group to abandon the car and escape on motorcycles that had been arranged earlier.

● Joint investigation

Through investigation, the police officers found that this case was very similar to previous incidents where people pretended to be passengers in order to rob cars.

On September 8th, 2011, a taxi driver surnamed Liu from Zhuhai picked up four young men who claimed they were going to the Waihai Bridge section of the city. Upon arrival, these men revealed their true intentions, holding knives and robbing over 1000 yuan in cash. They then threw Liu into a sugarcane field and drove off with his Shanghai Hualiun car. The two robbery cases had very similar methods and characteristics, indicating that they were likely committed by the same group. Therefore, the police decided to combine the two cases for investigation.

After further investigation, on the morning of December 30th, the police arrested the suspects Mai Wen (20 years old), Mai Ping (16 years old), Mai Kang (21 years old), and Mai Shi (23 years old).

● Gang Robbery

Through interrogation, Mai Wen and others confessed to the crime of robbing a car driver on the night of December 16th, 2011. Mai Wen also admitted that the robbery that occurred on September 8th, 2011, near the Waihai Bridge in Zhuhai was committed by him and another group of men.

According to the investigating police, the three other men involved in the "9・8" robbery in Zhuhai and the "9・17" robbery in Jiangmen are Huang Zheng, Li Zhu, and Guo Qin. They were captured by the Jiangmen police on September 19th, 2011.
