Yijun stood straight, gazing intently at her infant brother in the crib. She smelled something around the table. Her parents had told her that her brother’s illness was very serious. Though Yijun didn’t fully understand what the problem was, except that he didn’t seem happy and was always crying – just like now. She softly said, "Brother, don’t cry." Miraculously, her brother stopped crying and stared at his sister with tear-filled eyes. She took his hand, looking at his tiny fingers, which were sweaty and clutched tightly around hers. Yijun held him closer to comfort him a bit. Then, she heard her parents talking in the next room.
Even though Yijun was only six years old, she knew that when adults spoke in low voices, it meant they were discussing something important. Curious, she kissed her brother goodbye and tiptoed to the door to listen. Her father said, "The surgery is too expensive; we can’t afford it. I haven’t even been able to pay the bills recently." Her mother replied, "Now only a miracle can save him."
Yijun wondered, "What is a miracle? Why don’t they go get one?" She ran into the room, pulled out a dollar from her piggy bank, and decided she was going to buy a miracle for her brother!
Yijun went to the street supermarket and stood before the cashier in a long line. When Yijun jumped the queue, no one minded, and some even found it amusing. The little girl's face turned red as she approached the cashier. The cashier smiled warmly and asked, "Little sister, how may I assist you?"
She replied, "Thank you, I want to buy a miracle."
The cashier responded, "I’m sorry, but what exactly do you want?"
"Ah, my brother is really sick, and I want to buy a miracle," Yijun explained. The cashier was at a loss.
Not having any experience with children, the cashier then said, "Who can help this child? We don’t sell miracles here."
A well-dressed man asked, "What does your brother need a miracle for?" Including Yijun, everyone turned to look at him.
"I don’t know. My parents said my brother’s disease is very heavy and requires surgery," Yijun answered.
The well-dressed man bent over, bringing his hands closer to her. He asked, "How much money do you have?"
Yijun said, "One dollar."
The man picked up the dollar and said, "I think this is the price of a miracle right now. Let’s see your brother. Maybe I have the miracle you need."
A few months later, Yijun stood watching her brother in the crib. Her parents were talking to the well-dressed man, who turned out to be a renowned neurosurgeon. Yijun’s mother said, "Doctor, we still don’t know who paid for the surgery. You are an anonymous benefactor, and he must have spent a lot of money."
The doctor thought for a moment and said, "No, it only took a dollar and a small girl’s belief."
