On the morning of September 21st, Fu Jiaojiao finally reunited with her daughter after more than 20 days apart. Photo provided by Shanghai volunteer Zhou Shuping.
To save his seriously ill daughter, Xiao Zihan, Ma Zhaohui from the Jingxing mining area disregarded the risks and resolutely donated 200 grams of his liver to save her. After the surgery, Xiao Zihan remained in the intensive care unit, not yet out of danger (reported continuously by our newspaper since September 3rd).
Yesterday, I learned from Shanghai Renji Hospital that on the morning of September 21st, Xiao Zihan was transferred from the ICU to a regular sterile ward, where she will be observed for two weeks before being discharged.
Xiao Zihan begins drinking formula milk autonomously
Dr. Xia Qiang, Xiao Zihan's attending physician, told reporters on the morning of September 21st that due to Xiao Zihan's severe condition and young age, there were concerns about post-surgical risks such as rejection and infection. "Based on her current recovery status, we can judge that Xiao Zihan has now escaped life-threatening danger."
Dr. Xia Qiang stated that Xiao Zihan has overcome the most dangerous period, and what remains is the rehabilitation process. After approximately two weeks of observation at the hospital, she can return home for rest.
At 10:00 AM on September 21st, medical staff moved Xiao Zihan to a regular sterile ward. Because Xiao Zihan is too young, the hospital approved her mother, Fu Jiaojiao, to accompany her. At noon yesterday, Fu Jiaojiao fed Xiao Zihan 30 milliliters of formula milk. "Doctors say formula milk can be fed every three hours," Fu Jiaojiao said, "Since the surgery, Xiao Zihan hasn't been able to eat anything, only relying on intravenous nutrition. Now, she can finally eat something."
Unrecognized mom after over 20 days
Since September 2nd when Xiao Zihan was pushed into the operating room, Fu Jiaojiao could only see her daughter through a television screen every day. On September 21st, Fu Jiaojiao excitedly sent a text message to reporters upon seeing her baby again in the sterile ward after 20 days of separation.
After over 20 days without seeing her mom, Xiao Zihan didn't recognize Fu Jiaojiao anymore. "In the ICU, green-uniformed nurses took care of her, so Xiao Zihan only recognized people in green uniforms in the sterile ward but didn't recognize me," Fu Jiaojiao laughed.
After getting familiar in the morning, Xiao Zihan had become acquainted with her mom. "She doesn't cry, giggles when teased, and plays with toys on her own if left alone."
The love fund and donations have arrived
Because only one parent is allowed in the sterile ward, considering Ma Zhaohui just finished surgery and is still recovering, the hospital suggested he not enter the sterile ward. "I originally wanted him to recuperate in Shijiazhuang, but he wants to stay in Shanghai, saying he can see his daughter daily on the hospital TV screen," Fu Jiaojiao said.
Yesterday, Fu Jiaojiao once again expressed gratitude through our newspaper to the caring readers for their concern for Xiao Zihan. Fu Jiaojiao mentioned that Renji Hospital in Shanghai had informed her that the "Cherish Life Association" love fund and online donations initiated by "Happy Fish" have all been transferred to the hospital account. "Please rest assured; with so many caring individuals paying attention to Xiao Zihan, we will quickly overcome this difficulty." (Written by our newspaper intern reporter Cheng Guochang)
Review of the report:
Xiao Zihan, a five-month-old infant from Jiazhuang Town in Jingxing Mining Area, had her complexion turning increasingly yellow after birth, accompanied by swollen hands and feet and fever. She was later diagnosed with congenital biliary atresia, which required a liver transplant to save her. Her father, Ma Zhaohui, donated 200 grams of his liver, completing the transplant surgery at Renji Hospital in Shanghai. This act of great love deeply touched the readers, and caring individuals raised more than 43,000 yuan in donations. Due to Xiao Zihan's severe condition and young age, she remained in critical condition post-surgery. Xiao Zihan's condition has always been closely followed by caring individuals.
