Lei Sen's adoptive father said that after the first-instance verdict, he called the lawyer several times, asking him to continue appealing for Lei Sen. The lawyer had even prepared the appeal documents, but Lei Sen refused to sign them. The adoptive father thought Lei Sen had already "accepted his fate."
In October 2010, defendant Lei Sen, dissatisfied with his work and life, conceived the idea of retaliating against society. He purchased double-barrelled firecrackers, wires, batteries, remote controllers, and other materials to make a remote-controlled explosive device. Around 3 PM on October 21 of the same year, he placed the explosive device in Dongzhimen, Dongcheng District, Beijing, causing the Dongzhimen Explosion Case. The case concluded on April 6, 2011. The court ruled that defendant Lei Sen, in retaliation against society, made an explosive device and detonated it in a public place, causing minor injuries to one person. His actions endangered public safety and constituted the crime of explosion, and he should be punished according to law.
The court then made its ruling: Defendant Lei Sen was guilty of the crime of explosion and was sentenced to seven years in prison, with political rights deprived for one year. During the trial, Lei Sen and his defense counsel argued that Lei Sen's retaliatory action against society was due to issues with his mental health caused by his growth experiences and societal pressures.
Relevant personnel from the Dongcheng Court explained that although this defense could not serve as evidence for sentencing Lei Sen, the Criminal Division No. 2 adhered to the principle of "case closure, matter resolution, harmony among people," showing maximum humanitarian concern for the defendant, correcting psychological deviations in a timely manner, so that he could reintegrate into society in good health after serving his sentence. Therefore, the Criminal Division No. 2 of the Dongcheng Court contacted relevant psychology experts to provide psychological counseling for Lei Sen.
