The article "World's First Complex" was carried on the BBC website on July 3. The following is an abstract:

Reading a newspaper in Shanghai, I read about two instances of "the world's first" over the course of two days.

The first one: A landmark building called the "Graphic Information Building" at Fudan University's Shanghai Academy of Visual Arts has been completed in the Songjiang University Town in Shanghai. The front exterior of the building looks like a "big eye" with double eyelids, representing the perspective sense of visual art. This is the largest "eye-shaped building" in the world.

The second one: The roof of the "light top" of the new Shanghai South Railway Station building resembles a giant umbrella without a handle. This giant umbrella, with a diameter of 278 meters and an open canopy area of 60,000 square meters, is supported solely by 54 permanent steel pillars along its edge. The large roof uses no glass but rather a new type of material that is lighter than glass. The light top can selectively allow light to enter, with a transmittance rate as high as 65%, while also blocking ultraviolet rays and preventing 70% of the heat energy from sunlight from penetrating. This is the "largest circular translucent roof in the world."

Today, the people of Shanghai often take pride in their own "largest in the world," "highest in the world," "longest in the world" instances of "the world's first."

China's vast land and large population naturally lead to some aspects being "the world's first." The number of Chinese football fans is "the world's first"; the total number of Chinese scientific and technological personnel ranks "the world's first"; the volume of Chinese mobile phone text messages sent and received is "the world's first." People frequently read about such "world's firsts": Chongqing's new Yangtze River Bridge, known as the "Bridge Capital," has the "world's first" span among similar bridges; the cargo throughput of the Port of Shanghai has surpassed Singapore, making it the "world's first" port; Guangzhou boasts the world's tallest TV tower and the world's largest Ferris wheel; "The Art of War" is considered the "world's first" military treatise... "The world's first" seems to have become a kind of complex for the Chinese.

Of course, this "world's first" complex is not always deserving of criticism.

In recent days, a set of pictures has been circulating among Chinese netizens. A poor district government wants to build an office building that will be "the best for 30 years, not outdated for 50 years." Without mentioning the corruption involved in the project, many netizens directly point out that this is the "world's first" complex of officials who will stop at nothing to achieve their political achievements. In fact, from another perspective, the pre-sale of tickets for Guangzhou's new TV tower also reflects the weak mentality of the Chinese people under long-term poverty and backwardness.

Not long ago, Wu Jianmin, president of the Diplomatic Academy and director of the International Exhibitions Bureau, proposed that China should摆脱get rid of so-called "weak country mentality." Wu Jianmin said that the characteristics of the weak country mentality are: first, exaggerating one's own achievements and advantages; second, disliking to mention one's own shortcomings and inadequacies; third, being very sensitive to others' criticism and unable to calmly reflect. Wu Jianmin pointed out that the essence of the "weak country mentality" is a lack of confidence. For a country, it is a "weak country mentality," and when extended to individuals, it becomes a "weak citizen mentality": vanity, inferiority, jealousy, rebellion, inability to face reality, and inability to face oneself. For the Chinese to move towards becoming a "strong country with strong citizens," they still have a long way to go to develop a healthy psychology.
