Feeding Facilities: The bait for centipedes is often some live small animals, and when feeding, they need to be cut up. These bait animals may leave behind some mucus, feces, and juicy soft tissues before being consumed by the centipedes, which can contaminate the breeding soil or exercise area. Moreover, these things are difficult to clean and can easily lead to the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, when feeding centipedes, a bait tray should often be set up. Similar to a water tray, the bait tray for centipedes can also be a shallow plastic tray, which can be embedded in the breeding soil or fixed in the activity area, with its opening level with the surface of the breeding soil or the ground plane of the activity area. Thin wooden boards or hard, compacted cardboard can also be used as bait trays.
(5) Heating and Insulation Facilities: For breeders planning year-round production, winter temperature increase is an essential consideration. Therefore, when building breeding facilities, heating equipment should be considered. At the same time, to save space and maximize the efficiency of heat supply, it is recommended that the breeding pool be built with a three-dimensional multi-layer structure (such as a multi-layer breeding trough on a立体架). This way, the suspended breeding pool (trough) will make synchronized heating of the breeding soil and the indoor air easier. Heating facilities can adopt methods like "ground dragon" or "fire dragon". When conditions permit, boiler radiators can also be used for heating based on local conditions. If using "ground dragon" or "fire dragon", it's best to set up one or several along each side of the breeding pool, following the length axis of the pool, to maintain even temperatures within the pool. Meanwhile, it's best to place more thermometers in the airspace above the breeding pool, within the breeding soil, and at the center bottom of the breeding soil. If using radiators for heating, it's best to place them along the walls beside the long axis of the room, and the room's humidity retention performance must be good.
(6) Humidification Facilities: The humidification of the centipede site includes two aspects: air humidification and soil humidification. For outdoor breeders, soil humidity is the most critical issue to focus on, and this often needs to be considered during site construction. Mainly control the humidity of the breeding soil from aspects such as seepage from the bottom of the breeding pool, spraying and draining water from the breeding soil, and ventilation. Indoor breeders can use sprinkling, watering facilities, seepage, and drainage facilities for the humidity of the breeding soil. Here, special attention should be given to indoor breeders who warm their centipedes in winter. Due to the large temperature difference between indoors and outdoors, and the significant temperature difference between indoor air and breeding soil, water in the breeding soil evaporates very easily. Therefore, maintaining the humidity of the breeding soil becomes challenging. When constructing indoor three-dimensional breeding pools, it's best to add humidification facilities at the bottom of the breeding pool (trough).
2. Introduction of Species
1. Several principles to follow when introducing centipedes
(1) Introduce species according to the standards set by pharmaceutical departments for medicinal centipedes. Not all centipedes have medicinal development value. Pharmaceutical departments have certain requirements for the acquisition of centipedes. For example, ancient Chinese pharmacopoeia stipulated that less spines are the genuine medicinal centipedes, and among the less spined centipedes, those with red heads and legs are classified as the best quality. There are also specific regulations regarding the body size of mature centipedes. For instance, the original animal processed into medicine should have a body length of 100-110 millimeters, and after processing with bamboo strips, the length of the medicine reaches 140 millimeters. According to these requirements, our preferred choice for breeding medicinal centipedes should be the less spined centipedes, and we should try to choose those with red or near-red heads and legs, with a body length reaching at least 100 millimeters for adults.
