In 1745, the most advanced Swedish ocean-going merchant ship at the time, the "Göteborg", after various hardships, returned from China for the third time. While entering the port of Göteborg city, it unfortunately hit a reef and sank. In 1984, Swedish marine archaeologists salvaged this ancient merchant ship deep in the seabed. Among some of the salvaged blue-and-white porcelain jars, they found many small blue-and-white porcelain cans. When they opened them, they were amazed to find that they contained tea. Surprisingly, after being submerged in seawater for more than 200 years, these ancient teas in sealed packaging were still drinkable. After verification by tea experts, these ancient teas were identified as "Wuliqing" tea produced in the misty mountains of southern Anhui, a rare tea variety lost for more than 200 years. It was recorded that "Wuliqing" tea at the time was more valuable than jewels, and European nobles treasured it immensely.

The Revival of History

"Wuliqing" tea is a milestone product for Tianfang Tea Group today. What inspired the head of Tianfang Tea Group, Zheng Xiaohé, to develop "Wuliqing" was the novel "Xuehong Yinbai". In this novel written based on historical records, he saw many historical stories about Wuliqing. From relevant historical materials, he learned that there was once a historical famous tea called "Wuliqing" in southern Anhui. Thus, Mr. Zheng started reading a large amount of material and visited local old tea farmers. He learned that the "Wuliqing" of the time was known as "Xianzhi" and "Nenrui," with a value surpassing treasures. It was a specific tribute tea presented to the imperial court and had already been exported to Switzerland and other European countries at that time. However, due to war and turmoil, "Wuliqing" disappeared. Determined to revive the production of the historical famous tea "Wuliqing," before he made up his mind to restore "Wuliqing," Professor Zhan Luojiu, a tea expert from Anhui Agricultural University, had already studied "Wuliqing" for over ten years. This professor who wore liberation shoes traveled between villages in southern Anhui, witnessing the suffering of tea farmers and also yearning to restore the production of "Wuliqing" to help farmers solve their difficulties in selling tea and thus alleviate poverty. He had always wanted to find a capable company to help him develop "Wuliqing." When the two passionate intentions collided, the lost history was reborn, and "Wuliqing," which had been buried for over 200 years, finally "reappeared." In April 2003, along with the popular TV series "Xuehong Yinbai" invested and produced by Tianfang, Tianfang "Wuliqing" officially entered the market. For a time, "Wuliqing" became a focal point in the industry and an object pursued by consumers who loved tea.

Scarce Resources

Tea has very high requirements for its place of origin. Different soils and climates cultivate different tastes in tea. The original Wuliqing tea plants only grow on cliffs above 1000 meters, all in a wild state, coexisting with broadleaf forests, wild orchids, and other plants. They are infused with the fragrance of other plants' flowers. Moreover, due to the water vapor rising from the valleys in places like Xianyu Mountain and Dashan, where it originates, clouds and mists often cover the area, resulting in an average of 195 foggy days per year. The budding period of tea trees coincides with the peak foggy days, cultivating the unique quality of cloud mist tea. Due to climatic conditions, the harvesting time of "Wuliqing" tea is strictly defined, generally best suited from Qingming to one week before Guyu. During the "Wuliqing" tea picking process, there are unique requirements. This tea plant has more buds and fewer leaves; during picking, only the buds are plucked gently, like protecting a newborn baby. After picking, when returning home, a second selection must be conducted until all the bud heads are uniformly sized, compact, green, and lustrous, meeting the standards. Such strict requirements make "Wuliqing" extremely scarce, with an annual output of only around 1000 kilograms. The scarcity of resources creates inherent conditions for "Wuliqing's" revival and its occupation of the high-end tea market.

Strict Processes

In the manufacturing process of "Wuliqing" tea, the process requirements are strict, entirely traditional handcrafted methods. A person without more than five years of tea-making experience is not allowed to make "Wuliqing" tea. The tea maker needs strong hands and good skills to perform ten techniques such as shaking, leading, squeezing, throwing, straightening, expanding, pressing, grabbing, compressing, and grinding smoothly and steadily. These require long-term practice and contemplation to develop a good sense of touch. To create excellent quality, "Wuliqing" divides the manufacturing process into 37 steps, such as killing green, shaking loose, kneading, stir-frying second green, straightening strips, rolling and kneading again, sorting, and raising fine hairs. There are hundreds of variations before the tea can be made. After forming, "Wuliqing" tea consists of one bud and one spear, emerald green with many fine hairs. When immersed in water, the tea soup is clear and crystal, each piece uniform, standing upright like flags and spears. The aroma is fresh and lasting, and the taste is rich and sweet. Strict process requirements restore the original essence of "Wuliqing," ensuring outstanding quality and adding high-end elements.

Innovative Antique Packaging

In terms of packaging design, "Wuliqing" innovates the form of tea packaging, adopting historical antique packaging with blue-and-white porcelain jars. Since the packaging used for "Wuliqing" in the Göteborg shipwreck was porcelain, this close-to-history blue-and-white porcelain jar packaging highlights the tea's grade, making it highly favored by consumers.
