According to reports (by reporter Wang Penghao), Li Mou defrauded 200,000 yuan under the pretext of helping others and then went to a temple in Henan to repent his mistakes through cultivation. However, one year later, after returning to Beijing, he committed another crime. Li Mou was sentenced to 11 years in prison for fraud.
The prosecution stated that in 2005, Wang Mou, who operated a company together with Li Mou, said that retired soldier Liu Mou wanted to ask someone to help him return to work in the army. The two decided to defraud Liu Mou under the guise of offering assistance. After meeting, Liu Mou fully trusted them and handed over 200,000 yuan to Li Mou and Wang Mou for their help. Subsequently, the two went to Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, squandering all 200,000 yuan before parting ways. During this time, Liu Mou frequently called to inquire about the progress, but the two always used excuses such as complicated procedures to delay. By the end of 2006, Liu Mou reported the matter to the police.
In court, Li Mou said that he had been hiding and fleeing, “I fell seriously ill, feeling extremely guilty and troubled by my conscience.” In May 2008, he decided to go to a temple in Shangqiu, Henan, for spiritual cultivation. Li Mou claimed that a year later, he learned there was an opportunity to serve as the abbot at a temple in Beijing, so he returned to Beijing and rented a house near Xijic Town in Tongzhou. To sustain his living and pay off the loan on his family's house, Li Mou began to falsely claim to be a divine monk, deceiving people under the pretense of curing illnesses and warding off disasters.
In April last year, Ms. Wang saw her child acting confused and the hospital could not diagnose the cause, so she sought out Li Mou, who often appeared near Xijic Town, asking him to examine her child. After a series of checks, Li Mou claimed that the child had a spirit attached to it, instructing Ms. Wang to buy incense and cooking oil for chanting scriptures to cure the child. Ms. Wang followed all of "Divine Monk" Li's instructions, but her child’s condition did not improve. In June last year, Li Mou approached Ms. Wang, saying he needed to practice at a temple in Tanzhe Temple and required 20,000 yuan to obtain an abbot certificate. He borrowed 20,000 yuan from Ms. Wang and wrote her an IOU.
Ms. Wang's husband had long suspected Li Mou's identity. Seeing his wife lending money to Li Mou, he reported the matter to the police. After investigation, the police arrested Li Mou. When checking Li Mou's identity online, they discovered that he was a wanted fugitive, leading to the uncovering of the fraud case from several years ago.
