Introduction: Elderly people with diabetes often have cerebrovascular complications and memory decline. However, if such people are under stress, their memory can significantly deteriorate. A latest study in the UK shows that for elderly people with Type 2 diabetes, stress may harm their memory and other cognitive abilities. Please see [Scientific Exploration] - Revealing: High stress damages memory in diabetics!
Type 2 diabetes predominantly affects those over 40 years old. Medical research has already found that patients with Type 2 diabetes often experience symptoms of memory and cognitive ability decline, but the exact cause has remained unclear.
Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied nearly a thousand Type 2 diabetic patients aged between 60 and 75. They discovered that patients who showed poorer brain function in intelligence tests and vocabulary tests usually had higher levels of cortisol in their bodies. Cortisol is a stress hormone, and its level reflects the state of physiological and psychological stress.
Rebecca Reynolds, one of the researchers, said that the study shows that diabetic patients with high levels of cortisol are more likely to experience cognitive decline. This suggests that controlling the levels of cortisol in the body might help improve cognitive abilities in Type 2 diabetic patients.
The results of this study have been published in the latest issue of the American journal "Diabetes Care." Researchers stated that they will continue searching for other factors affecting memory and cognitive abilities in diabetic patients.
