It is reported that some users experienced sudden browser crashes after installing the Internet Explorer security patch provided by Microsoft last week. Microsoft has now released a solution to this issue.
The critical browser security patch released by Microsoft last Tuesday was intended to fix certain vulnerabilities in IE. However, shortly after its release, users reported that their browsers were crashing after installing the patch. According to Microsoft, this issue is not widespread and only affects machines with IE6 browsers equipped with the Security Update 942615 patch package and running Windows XP SP2.
This patch package is named MS07-069. Users encountering browser crashes can resolve the issue by modifying the registry. The solution can be found in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article.
The detailed steps are as follows:
1. Click Start, select Run, type regedit, and press Enter.
2. Locate the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\
3. In the Edit menu, select New > "Item".
4. Type FEATURE_PROTECT_DECOMPRESSION_FILTER_FROM_ABORT_KB942367, then press Enter.
5. Right-click on FEATURE_PROTECT_DECOMPRESSION_FILTER_FROM_ABORT_KB942367, select New, then choose New "DWORD Value".
6. Type asterisk (*), then press Enter.
Note: The asterisk (*) represents any process using the urlmon.dll file. If you want to use a standalone application process that uses the Urlmon.dll file, you need to enter the name of that process, for example, appname.exe.
7. Right-click on the asterisk, select Modify.
8. Enter 1 in the value field, then select OK.
9. Exit the Registry Editor.
This method should help resolve the issue for affected users.
