There’s finally a new number one team in the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings. After five weeks on top, the San Jose Sharks have been supplanted by the Washington Capitals in the number one position. The Calgary Flames continue to ride Miikka Kiprusoff’s stellar play and have moved into fourth spot, the highest ranking for a Canadian team. Toronto, ranked 29th, is the lowest-ranked Canadian squad.

Heading the other way, the Capitals’ victims on Saturday night, the Philadelphia Flyers, are in the midst of a tough stretch — one that cost head coach John Stevens his job — and they’ve plummeted to 17th after reaching as high as third just a few weeks ago. The Ottawa Senators were the other team to suffer a big drop as Sunday’s shootout win at Anaheim was their only point in four road contests last week, moving the Senators down to 23rd spot.

Following Washington’s 8-2 win over Philadelphia on Saturday, without Ovechkin, Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau was still looking forward to getting Ovechkin back in the lineup, telling the Washington Post, "It shows our depth, but we’ll be happy when he plays Monday. He’s a goal-a-game guy and the best player in the league. He’s done it so many times for them, so they’re stepping up for him."
The rest of the big risers came further down the board, with the Kings, who are unbeaten in four, jumping to 13th. The Oilers won a pair of road games, with backup netminder Jeff Deslauriers in goal, to move up to 21st, while the Minnesota Wild are gradually moving in the right direction and have climbed to 25th.
