Quarterback Jimmy Clausen and receiver Golden Tate announced Monday they will bypass their senior seasons and enter the NFL draft. They shared the team’s most valuable player award. "I don’t think we could have done more than we did this past year," Clausen said. "I think this is just the best time for us to go out." Clausen is widely expected to be taken in the first round. He was 289 of 425 passing for 3,722 yards and 28 touchdowns with four interceptions. Tate had 93 catches for 1,496 yards with 15 receiving touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns and a punt return for a score. Clausen’s departure leaves the Irish with one quarterback on scholarship, Bills jerseys, Dayne Crist, who is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
5 to vie for Heisman Tim Tebow became the first player to be invited to the Heisman Trophy presentation ceremony three times when the Florida quarterback was named a finalist Monday for college football’s most prestigious player of the year award. The others: Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, running backs Mark Ingram of Alabama and Toby Gerhart of Stanford, San Francisco 49ers, and Nebraska lineman Ndamukong Suh, 2008 Pro Bowl, who won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player. The Heisman will be awarded Saturday in Manhattan. Tebow won it in 2007.
Kelly, Irish to talk Cincinnati Coach Brian Kelly confirmed Monday he will meet with Notre Dame officials about their open job, leaving the fourth-ranked Bearcats with a lot of uncertainty heading into the Sugar Bowl. The New York Times reported that Stanford Coach Jim Harbaugh also is being interviewed for the job as Charlie Weis’ successor. Harbaugh declined to talk about it. Asked on Dan Patrick’s radio show if he’d definitely coach the Bearcats in the Sugar Bowl, Kelly said, "No, there’s no guarantees in anything that you do."
