Oakland Raiders NFL Week 13 Preview: Houston Texans @ Jackson

by alasjtom on 2009-12-08 16:30:18

Lining up against the Detroit Lions for Houston will be rookie Brian Cushing, who is in fine form and a clear favorite for the defensive rookie of the year award. He has shown a tenacity and an understanding of the game that is rare in veteran linebackers, let alone rookies, and it will be his job to maintain a grip on Jacksonville’s slippery running game. Star pass-rusher Mario Williams has been inconsistent so far this season, but looked good last week in the loss to the Colts, getting a rare sack on Manning. Look for him to be a marauding presence, especially towards the end of the game.

And with division rivals Tennessee in resurgent form, the game at Jacksonville’s Municipal Stadium becomes all the more important. This is sure to be a high-scoring contest, with two of the NFL’s best offenses going at it. But don’t be surprised if it’s a defensive effort that proves to be the deciding factor. The Texans have struggled to close games out in recent weeks, even giving up a 17 point lead against the Colts last Sunday. But their defense is heating up, and a game against Garrard, who has fumbled 11 times already this year, could be just what the doctor ordered.

There are reports coming out of Houston that running back Steve Slaton will miss the contest with an injured shoulder, and if that’s the case then Chris Brown will start in his place. Coincidentally, it was Brown who lost the ball in the endzone when these sides last met in week 3, turning what would have been a game-tying touchdown into a game-losing fumble with 2:10 left on the clock, and allowing the Jaguars to hold out for a 31-24 win. If Slaton is out, and with Owen Daniels injured too, it falls to Andre Johnson, their pro bowl wideout, to shoulder the attack against a struggling Jaguars pass defense that ranks 26th in the league.

In fact, they haven’t been beaten there since September, mostly due to the phenomenal play of Maurice Jones-Drew. In his first full season as a starter, Jones-Drew is sixth in the league in rushing (1,001 yards), and has racked up a league-leading 13 touchdowns on the ground. Quarterback David Garrard has been inconsistent, but is better at home than on the road. Coupled with the emergence of Mike Sims-Walker at wide receiver, the Jags have put together a good, if not routinely convincing offense, and it will be interesting to see how their elusive trio fare against Houston’s defensive playmakers.
