To be at peace by the side of one's beloved

Not a single enemy was in the hospital, yet people came to visit him there. The man and his wife each stood by one side of the bed as she described what would happen after he was discharged. His leg was injured, eight steel nails were driven in, a steel plate was installed, and he must not move without support. After the anesthetic wore off, he suffered in pain for a day and night without sleep. His wife stayed by the bedside day after day. He slept in the intervals of pain, but only felt at ease when he woke and saw her by his side.

This middle-aged man had not gone through life unscathed. As a detective for over a decade, he was used to chasing criminals and was known for his iron will. Yet, lying on the hospital bed, he could only feel at peace when he saw the face of his own person.

She said that because she worried about his pain, she didn't dare leave. It wasn't easy for her to see him suffer so much, so she took time to cook soup at home and also tried to catch up on the sleep she had lost over the past few days. However, when she brought the freshly cooked soup to the hospital the next day, she saw that his eyes were bloodshot.

He somewhat resentfully wanted to say loudly: "I don't know what's wrong, but whenever I think about you not being by my side, I wake up in shock." She teased him: "Are you still a kid? If I leave for one night, I can't sleep."

The speaker may have been unintentional, but it left a deep impression.

Later, when my wife went abroad, our whole family went to Nanjing to apply for visas. During the waiting period, we spent mornings and evenings together in the same room. During these days, I changed my habit of staying up late, sleeping early and waking up early, and sleeping soundly. Even when they were laughing loudly while watching TV, it couldn't stop me from sleeping. My wife was a bit surprised and said: "You always complain about your poor sleep quality and how even the slightest noise keeps you awake?" He didn't know that I could sleep so soundly because knowing that the person who hates me the most is by my side made me feel that the surrounding atmosphere was peaceful and safe, which allowed me to sleep with ease. After hearing this, my wife remained silent for a long time before saying: "In the future, I'll try to come home earlier."

What is love? To put it simply, love is like having an often forgotten trust and reliance. It's because of you that I can sleep soundly and without any worry.
