How much progress has been made in the area of storage security? For years, experts have talked about the risks associated with security and storage. These include the lack of basic network security practices related to SANs as well as familiar issues dealing with offsite media. In the latter case, it seems that not a week goes by without another report of lost or stolen laptops or tapes containing confidential information.
From all appearances, outside of the victimized companies that have been forced into action by public exposure, progress in storage security is coming along rather slowly.
Also, some so-called storage security initiatives should more accurately be labeled as offsite tape security. In other words, the focus is not on a strategic approach to protecting all storage architectures but rather on a trouble spot that frequently makes headlines. Given that, it's understandable that there would be an attempt to address this particular security hole. However, without an overall plan, we're likely just rearranging deck chairs.
