Indeed, there are some add-ons that we should avoid at all costs, even though some of them remain popular.

Popularity is not a good indicator of whether or not an extension should be installed. The question is whether it enhances your browsing experience without introducing side effects. The good news is that the add-on community has become quite skilled at self-policing. Most glaringly bad (as in, crashing your browser or eating all your CPU resources) add-ons have been either fixed or disappeared.
