Yuanmingyuan is the gem of China's gardening art, and it is praised as "the garden of all gardens". It was an incomparable royal garden in the Qing Dynasty. The construction started in 1709 and was basically completed in 1809, lasting for a century. After that, during the reigns of Jiaqing, Daoguang, and Xianfeng, there were frequent repairs and expansions, lasting for more than 150 years.
The Yuanmingyuan that people usually refer to is actually composed of three gardens: Yuanming, Changchun, and Qichun (later renamed "Wanchun"), with a total area of 347 hectares. Its land construction area is 10,000 square meters more than the Forbidden City, and its outer perimeter is about 10 kilometers long. The water area is equal to that of the Summer Palace.
