The "Cihua Edition," also known as the Wanli Edition (the woodblock-printed version of *Jin Ping Mei Cihua* from the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty), is an early edition with folk storytelling characteristics. Its language and narrative style are relatively simple and retain their original flavor.
2. The "Xiuxiang (Zhang's Commentary) Edition," also known as the Chongzhen Edition (the woodblock-printed version from the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty), contains 200 woodcut illustrations. Its full title is *Newly Engraved Xiuxiang Critical Edition of Jin Ping Mei*, hence it is called the Xiuxiang Edition. This version was later refined and polished by literati, making its language more standardized and enhancing its literary quality. However, the original simplicity of the early editions was somewhat affected, and there is a tinge of didacticism characteristic of some scholar-officials. In the early Qing Dynasty, Zhang Zhupo added commentary to this edition, which subsequently became very popular. As a result, the Chongzhen Edition was largely replaced by the Zhang Commentary Edition. Most versions of the Chongzhen Edition available today are actually Zhang's annotated edition.
**Cihua Edition System (Wanli Edition):**
- **One**, *Newly Carved Jin Ping Mei Cihua*: Reprinted in 1957 by the Ancient Literature Publishing Society based on the photolithographic edition published by the "Beijing Ancient Lost Novels Publication Association" in October 1933. It consists of two boxes and twenty-one volumes, with the 200 illustrations compiled into one volume.
- **Two**, *Jin Ping Mei Cihua* - Dai Hongsen’s critical edition, published by the People's Literature Publishing House in May 1985. This is an abridged version in two volumes, with a print run of 10,000 copies.
