Changdeok Palace was built in 1405 (the fifth year of King Taejong's reign) about two kilometers east of Gyeongbok Palace as a detached palace. The rear garden of Changdeok Palace was a forbidden garden of the Korean royal family, inaccessible to commoners, and is also called the Forbidden Garden. The kings studied, cultivated themselves, and also used it as a place for leisure and entertainment. They often hunted here, practiced martial arts, held grand banquets, escaped from the troubles of politics, and found joy in the environment of desireless humility.
