Changdeok Palace was built in 1405 (the 5th year of King Taejong) about two kilometers east of Gyeongbok Palace as a secondary palace. The rear garden of Changdeok Palace was a prohibited area for common people, also known as the Forbidden Garden. It was a place where kings studied, cultivated themselves, and also enjoyed leisure activities. They often hunted, practiced martial arts, held grand banquets here, escaping from the troubles of politics, feeling joyful in an environment of desireless humility. The pavilions and ponds with various shapes blend harmoniously with nature, making it hard to distinguish between what is architecture and what is nature. Especially in the deep autumn when maple leaves turn red, or during the season when leaves fall, the beauty here always creates a "greed" to monopolize it.
