It was said that Yongzheng believed Li Fu had formed a faction with Xie Jieshi and falsely accused Tian Wenjing. As a result, Xie Jieshi was stripped of his official post and exiled, while Li Fu was demoted to the position of Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Works. From then on, Li Fu began a life of political turmoil.

In February of the fifth year of Yongzheng's reign, Han Liangyu, the acting governor of Guangxi, submitted a memorial to Yongzheng, stating that Mo Dongwang, who was imprisoned in Tianhe County (today's Tianhe Township in Luocheng County), was originally a criminal sentenced by Li Fu but not executed for a year, leading to him being "kidnapped" by the "barbaric Zhuang people." In principle, the escape of a criminal under new management should be the responsibility of the new management, who should take the blame. However, Han Liangyu criticized the previous administration's policies as inadequate instead. After hearing this, Yongzheng immediately ordered Li Fu to explain clearly. Li Fu replied: "The case of Mo Dongwang, I have already reviewed and settled it before going to Zhili to assume my new post. How could it drag on for a year? I really don't know about it." Yongzheng became extremely angry and said: "The old magistrate must inform the new magistrate of the situation." He deliberately made things difficult for Li Fu, ordering him to return to Guangxi alone without any officials or soldiers, and capture Mo Dongwang to settle the case. All the scholars and officials in the court were worried about Li Fu. Li Fu had no choice but to set off alone. On the way, however, Mo Dongwang surrendered voluntarily. When questioned why he did so, Mo Dongwang answered: "I can avoid letting Mr. Li down." —— It turned out that when Mo Dongwang learned that Li Fu was implicated in his case, he felt guilty and decided to turn himself in. This shows that Li Fu was very popular in Guangxi during his tenure.

Although the case of Mo Dongwang was settled, Li Fu lost his official position.
