"Dong" in Korea

Every time I see information about South Korea, I see a lot of "dong": Myeong-dong, Insadong, Samcheong-dong, Seocho-dong, Gangnam-dong, etc. These are not caves, water holes, or tree holes...

In the "Chinese Character Dictionary" of the Korean language, "dong" is explained as follows: On the left side of the character is "氵", which represents "water". Combined with the right side "同" (tong), it means "a place with water". In ancient times, this was extended to mean "village". Nowadays, "dong" in the Korean language refers to "streets" and has no relation to the Chinese term "shan dong" (mountain cave).
