Review of pediatric constipation

Each baby's bowel movement habits or patterns are different. Some babies have bowel movements 6-7 times a day, while others may only have one every 7 days. There is no necessary correlation between whether a baby is constipated and their bowel movement habits. We cannot conclude that a baby is definitely constipated just because she has a bowel movement only once every 7 days. If the baby passes soft stools without any difficulty each time, we cannot define her as being constipated; rather, we can only say that her bowel habits differ from those of most babies. Constipation refers to a condition where the interval between bowel movements is prolonged, the stools are dry, and the process of having a bowel movement is relatively difficult.
