Breeding of Yellow Mealworms
Provided by the Golden Land Agriculture Yellow Mealworm Breeding Base:
1. The breeding process of yellow mealworms is relatively complex, and we have mainly experimented with two methods. One method involves capturing naturally occurring yellow mealworms for reproduction and breeding them together with artificially farmed populations to reduce the phenomenon of genetic degradation. Wild yellow mealworms often have strong vitality and high reproductive capacity. Another method is to crossbreed yellow mealworms with black mealworms, producing hybrid varieties that have strong vitality and high reproduction rates, but the growth period of the hybrids is longer. Hybrid breeding is a complex technical issue that needs to be gradually carried out during long-term farming.
2. Yellow mealworm mating mostly occurs at night. The mating process can be easily interrupted by light stimulation, which may scare the insects and terminate mating. Adult insects should be kept in a dark environment with minimal interference. Mating also has temperature requirements; there is rarely any mating below 20°C or above 32°C. During the mating and egg-laying period, nutritionally rich feed should be provided.
3. Selection of breeding stock can be done by choosing better individuals during the farming process for breeding purposes. The general standards for selection are large size, bright coloration, and strong activity. The breeding stock should be well-nourished and managed from the larval stage, especially during the adult stage. Additives such as royal jelly that stimulate reproduction and egg-laying can be added to the feed, along with frequent vegetable feeding and appropriate increases in complex vitamins. Maintaining optimal environmental temperature and humidity, keeping suitable density, and regularly cleaning up insect droppings can also improve the quality of the yellow mealworm breeding stock and increase egg production.
4. Most yellow mealworm breeding stocks available on the market have been bred for dozens of generations over many years and have shown signs of degeneration, such as small size, long growth periods, low reproduction rates, susceptibility to diseases, and high mortality rates. Some larvae take nearly a year to grow but remain small, fail to pupate, or frequently produce disabled individuals. Therefore, attention should be paid to updating the variety, just as other farming industries require selective breeding and breeding research.
