(1) Application of earthworm powder in laying hens Feeding chickens with earthworm powder results in faster weight gain, better meat quality, more egg production, and effects superior to fishmeal. Zhang Guiying (1995) reported that compared with laying hens fed fishmeal, adding 5% earthworm powder increased the average egg weight of laying hens by 1.99g (P0.05). Therefore, adding 5% earthworm powder to the daily diet of laying hens can not only replace the same amount of fishmeal but also reduce the feed consumption of laying hens, increase egg production and egg weight, making earthworms a high-quality protein feed for laying hens. Ma Xueyun et al. (2002) reported that adding 2% earthworm powder to the basic daily diet of laying hens could increase the egg-laying rate by 3.41% (P0.05). Calculating the feed cost at 1.30 yuan/kg for the control group and 1.00 yuan/kg for the experimental group, the feed cost required for weight gain was reduced by 0.42 yuan in the experimental group. Therefore, using earthworms as feed additives in broiler feed can not only reduce the feed-to-meat ratio and production costs but also lower the mortality rate of broilers.
