A probe specially designed to study the boundaries of the solar system turned around and looked back at the shocking sight of the solar wind hitting Earth's magnetosphere head-on, foreign media reported.
NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) spacecraft has recorded for the first time a violent collision between the solar wind and Earth's magnetic field, NASA officials said in a statement. The solar wind is a stream of high-energy particles sent out by the sun at millions of kilometers per hour. If the Earth's magnetic field fails to deflect the path of these energetic particles, then the particles will rush into the Earth's atmosphere.
