A research team from the RIKEN Institute in Japan has clarified through experiments on tropical fish why the brain's left and right structures differ. The difference in the timing of the emergence of two types of nerve cells causes the disparity between the left and right sides, forming an asymmetrical structure.
It is highly likely that humans have a similar mechanism for the formation of brain nerve cells. This research achievement is said to provide a clue to understanding the evolutionary process of brain functions.
