The simple method of coin divination:
Divination uses three 5-cent coins (a one-dollar coin is also ok, but the year and style of the coins must be the same). For copper coins, the character side is the front and the pattern side is the back. For coins, the number side is the front and the national emblem side is the back. The main thing is to see how many backs there are.
1. Place both palms together in a prayer position, while simultaneously holding the three coins between your palms. Clear your mind of杂念, and silently think about the matter you want to divine, focusing and stabilizing this thought. (For example, think for 45 seconds to a minute. (Note: The intention for divination must be focused, it's best to ask about one matter at a time.)
2. While maintaining the above intention, shake your hands up and down with the coins inside. (Please note that you should not hold the coins too tightly; slightly curve your palms outward to leave some space so that when you shake your hands, the coins can flip inside your palms.)
3. Continue to maintain the intention for divination while shaking. After shaking several times (the number of times is not fixed, three to five times is fine), open your palms and let the coins fall onto the table, countertop, or floor.
4. Check the combination of the faces and backs of the coins and record it. Record based on the number of coins with the back facing up:
1) If only one coin has its back facing up, record "Shaoyang"
2) If two coins have their backs facing up, record "Shaoyin"
3) If all three coins have their backs facing up, record "Lao Yang"
4) If none of the three coins have their backs facing up, record "Lao Yin"
Record the corresponding symbols on paper based on the situation of the coins.
5. Maintain the intention for divination, pick up the coins, place them back in your palm, and repeat steps 2, 3, and 4. Shake again to get the second result, and record the corresponding symbol directly above the first result. Repeat this process to get the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth results. The later results' symbols should be recorded higher up. After recording six results, the process of shaking the coins to form a hexagram is complete.
