According to foreign media reports, Linux runs on Google's servers, managing billions of searches every day. Linux also runs on TiVo digital video recorders, Motorola's Razr phones, and countless other electronic devices.

But why do people want to run the open-source system Linux on their computers? Jim Zemlin, the executive director of the Linux Foundation, said that many people see Linux as a political ideal - freedom. They don't want to be tied down by Microsoft and Apple; they need another option. However, this is not the main reason consumers care about; the real reason is that Linux is free or almost free.
