Detailed Plot
Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), a billionaire playboy and genius inventor, is often referred to as the modern-day Leonardo da Vinci. At 15, Stark graduated top of his class from MIT, and at 21, he became the heir to the immensely wealthy industrial giant Stark Enterprises. Since taking over the family business, with the help of his old classmate Jim Rhodes (Terrence Howard), Stark Industries has developed rapidly in its cooperation with the U.S. military.
With billions in assets, an extraordinary intellect, and good looks, Stark could get anything he wanted without much effort. Recently, Stark created an invention that he was particularly proud of: the ultra-powerful new combat missile - "Archangel." To test the weapon's power, he decided to personally go to Afghanistan to monitor the combat effects on-site. However, this trip had been closely watched by a group of terrorists who had long planned an ambush. In the attack, Stark not only suffered severe heart injuries from shrapnel but was also kidnapped and imprisoned, forced to create the most lethal destructive weapon for the enemy. In a moment of crisis, the highly intelligent Stark secretly used available materials to build a set of high-tech "powered armor" and managed to escape successfully using the iron suit.
Back in the U.S., Stark continued his outward life of luxurious parties and extravagant socializing as a playboy. However, at night, he began to secretly operate under another identity – Iron Man! Wearing specially enhanced armor, Stark possessed incredible powers – superhuman strength, flight, supersonic movement, extreme durability, and various advanced weapons attached to the armor, such as palm-fired shock lasers and chest-launched single-beam cannons, all with astonishing destructive power. During an unexpected incident, Stark uncovered a meticulously plotted conspiracy that endangered global security. While fighting against the evil forces threatening world safety, he would also discover that his greatest adversary was none other than himself.
Key Points
In 1963, a legendary figure emerged from the Marvel Comics empire – Tony Stark. This character, modeled after the legendary American billionaire Howard Hughes, not only owned billions of dollars, a heavy military industry, but was also a genius inventor, an invincible adventurer, and a playboy. He provided high-tech gadgets for Marvel's X-Men, Spider-Man, The Avengers, and The Ultimates, and even served as the U.S. Secretary of Defense at one point. His influence overshadowed even Batman, who prided himself on being an aristocrat.
The comic book superhero has dominated North America for years, yet this Invincible Iron Man remained calm and waited for the perfect opportunity to take the throne. Finally, Paramount wooed Marvel's approval, investing $200 million to create the "Iron Man" suit, and boldly claimed the first week of summer following Spider-Man's success, showing their ambitious plans for financial gain. Not only did this attract five Oscar favorites – Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, and Samuel L. Jackson – but when Jackson willingly reduced his screen time in the film to prioritize the upcoming sequel, it became clear: the domination of this legendary hero had just begun!
For the first major appearance of Iron Man, what fans were most eagerly anticipating was undoubtedly the breathtaking glimpse of the ultimate high-tech battle suit! From the bulky gray armor to the streamlined gold-and-red molecularly restructured and magnetically enhanced armor, Iron Man went through three generations of suits. The final upgraded armor featured direct neural mechanical interface brainwave control, the ability to absorb surrounding energy, and included sound wave cannons, freezing beams, magnetic manipulation, energy shields, illusion generators, jet propulsion systems, and electromagnetic pulse launchers among other powerful functions. As a result, the transformation process of Iron Man was as cool and stylish as Transformers, and the high-tech suit truly deserved its ultimate title!
Other Notes
This super-powered hero is no ordinary one – not only is he an arms dealer, a billionaire, and a mad inventor, but also a rare dark hero in Marvel Comics. Not only does he keep up with the times and tie in with anti-terrorism efforts in Afghanistan, but he also avoids the strong anti-communist tendencies prevalent in comics, making a pre-emptive landing in Chinese cinemas. Clearly, he’s not your average person! This morally ambiguous and mysterious comic hero has excited Hollywood since 1999 – Quentin Tarantino, who usually disdains big productions, almost joined the "Iron Man" project, Nicolas Cage, a comic enthusiast who also starred in "Spider-Man," was drooling over the role, and even Tom Cruise in his prime showed interest...
However, the final choice wasn't anyone else but the powerhouse Robert Downey Jr., whose charisma perfectly matched Iron Man. A self-proclaimed ultimate fan of the Iron Man comics, Downey moved his office next to the director's during filming and completely changed his prima donna attitude, claiming he'd be happy to do 15 sequels. Months of intensive physical training and martial arts preparation before shooting, followed by eight months of meticulous work with the motion capture CGI department post-shooting, made Downey the ideal candidate for the role. If the crazy sales of Iron Man comics and related merchandise are just Marvel's warm-up act, then the upcoming summer blockbuster will showcase the true "slaughtering" power of comic heroes!
