Frequently accused of copyright infringement, China's media mouthpiece CCTV made an unprecedented promotion of Linux and open source software during its "Oriental Horizon" program on September 12th.
This episode, titled "Tomato Garden and Microsoft," discussed the arrest of Tomato Garden's author, netizens' reactions to the event, Microsoft's intellectual property rights, and its monopoly issues. At the end of the program, there was a sudden mention of Linux and open source software, with a demonstration of the Compiz Fusion 3D desktop in the video. It claimed that Microsoft's Windows operating system is less secure than open-source Linux due to its closed-source nature. The program commented, "If the webmaster of Tomato Garden could apply his intelligence to open-source software, he might have a bright future."
